Mountain biking has become a favorite way to stay active and fit, so much so that today there hundreds of different bikes to choose from. Trying to decide what is the best bike for your needs doesn’t have to be a difficult task. Consider a few key points and you will soon find yourself hitting the trails on your brand new bike.

First, consider what you will be doing with your bike. If you are in for the full on adventure, you will need a full-suspension bike and all the latest technology. If you are not interested in that much adventure, a hybrid bike is more in keeping with your needs. Hybrid bikes are great bikes because they work just as well on streets as they do trails.

Finally, you must consider what your budget is. Like anything, a mountain bike can cost you a lot of money. Typical bikes will run between $600 and $5,000. You can find a bike to fit your budget.

When you think about it, a mountain bike is not unlike a pair of running shoes. Just as a runner must decide what they need by speaking with an expert, sometimes your best bet is to go into the bike shop and talk to them. They will help find a bike that is the best fit for your needs and your budget.

Remember, if you are new to the sport, it is a good idea to start with a less expensive model. You can always upgrade later.

Mountain biking is all about getting out in the wilderness and having fun. However, there is a boring and tedious part to mountain biking; having to care and maintain your bike.

Bike maintenance is critical to ensure the safety of yourself and others who are riding the bike. A well maintained bike will also run smoother which allows you to focus on the thrills and excitement that comes with mountain biking and not worry about getting injured.

Here’s a look at some of the basic mountain bike maintenance you need to do to your bike on a regular basis.

A Complete Wash

Mountain biking can be a very dirty sport. The dirt and debris that you ride through while biking can collect in the wheels, chains and other parts of the bike which puts your safety at risk. Every once in a while a complete wash of the mountain bike is needed. Everything from the seat, handlebars and wheels needs to washed with soap and water and hosed down.

The Wheel Test

A complete wheel test needs to be performed to make sure your bike is operating properly. Place the bike with the wheels up to perform this test. Take each wheel and make sure it turns properly in the bike and there is no interruption. You will also want to check the air pressure of each wheel and fill any that have low air pressure.

Running through the basic mountain bike maintenance steps once a month will ensure that you are safe and secure while enjoying your favorite extreme sport.

Any sport can be wagered on. The sport of cycling is global with local events, to corporation events, to the widely know Tour de France.

Before laying any money down, do some research at a site such as wcrpalmares.org. A player needs to become familiar with the sport of cycling, and know information about the athletes involved such as past performance, injuries, typical patterns of competition, and how their training went before the race. This information narrows the field of who to bet on, and lets a player focus. The following are some ways on how to bet:

Simple bet – A simple bet is where a player with another individual or small group simply states that if such a player wins they will put into the pot a set amount of money. All put in and when the winner is announced that player gets the whole pot.

A pool bet – A pool bet often occurs at work. A trusted person will start a pool with a list of parameters such as who will be the winner, or who will be ahead in a certain part of the race. The parameters in the pool will have varying amounts of money attached. There are often multiple winners in this type of betting.

Online betting – Online betting is formalized. It gives statistics on players, past performance, and a prediction in number form called “the odds” on who will win. A player has choices on types of bets such as head-to-head, or parley bets. Bets are placed online and money is paid through an account whether a player attends the event or not.

Most fitness oriented people either run, bike, swim or do some other aerobic activity a few times a week. Cycling as a sporting activity is very healthy for legs and torso as it builds muscles, develops stamina and provides a good workout for people.

Cycling as a sport has been made very popular by people such as Lance Armstrong. Armstrong is a cancer survivor who underwent gruesome treatment. Yet, through his grit and determination he displayed triumph of will, he became the most famous Tour de France champion.

As a sport, cycling has become very popular due to Armstrong’s successes and is considered very hip and sexy these days, much like tennis and baseball. Sports betting sites have traditionally been very strong in football, baseball, basketball and hockey, but cycling as a sport is very attractive for betting also. Cycling can be a very enjoyable sport with the family and friends in an after work sunny evening when it is not too hot and windy. Newlywed couples can take their bicycles and ride around town or the suburbs depending upon how safe it is in terms of crime and traffic.

It also keeps you alert and mentally active as you have to keep a balance and watch out for pets such as dogs, traffic from vehicles and stay alert to see if there are kids out playing who you might not see as they run towards you trying to explore the surroundings or grab a ball. Cycling is an activity which the young and old, men and women, and especially environmentally conscious people love to get involved in.

Many people get confused between mountain bikes and sports bike; however a trained sports person can easily tell you the difference by just looking at both the bikes. Mountain bikes are designed to be short and sturdy whereas road bikes are tall and lightweight. The basic structure of these bikes differs a lot because they are designed for two different terrains. The road bikes are meant to traverse through smooth asphalt roads, whereas the mountain bikes are meant for more dusty and uneven terrain.

The tires of mountain bikes are thicker and they have more treading to avoid skidding against the pebbles and stones. The tires of road bikes are larger in circumference and are thinner as compared to the mountain bikes. Road bikes do not have excessive treading on their tires. The road bikes have shorter inward curved handles whereas the mountain bikes have straighter and shorter handles. Mountain bikes are not meant to travel at high speeds. These bikes are designed for uneven terrains and the emphasis is more on control and technique of riding. On the contrary, the road bikes are designed to slice through the air so that the rider can achieve optimum speed. Mountain bikes are heavy and sturdy whereas road bikes are feather light and easy to break down. The maintenance costs of a mountain bike are higher as compared to a road bike due to the rough usage of the bike.

One can see different types of mountain bikes and road bikes in different sport shows. One can compare the prices and models of various bikes before you buy the right bike for your cycling needs.

Road bikes or bicycles as they are popularly called haven’t undergone major changes from their inception. The basic frame remains the same. A bicycle is an eco friendly way of transport and is also very good way to exercise your body. Road bikes have a simple structure. They have short bent handles and are taller. These bikes are light weight and hardly have any shock absorption facility in place.

Most road bikes do not stress on the importance of shock absorbers and springs as they are run on paved road. These bikes are designed in a manner that they slice across the air and are able to catch up speed. Road bikers are usually people with long legs and tremendous muscular strengths. The curved handles allow the bikers to stay close to the bike and control the bike. The handles of road bikes are metallic and light weight. The whole frame of a road bike is hollow. It is designed in such a fashion to allow the rider to travel at a faster speed. Earlier road bikes were made of wood and they were very uncomfortable to travel by. Slowly metallic bikes were invented. The invention of bike chain made it easier for the cyclist to ride faster. The pedals allowed a firm footing while pushing the cycle.

The present day road bikes are extremely light weight and they are designed from metals like steel or titanium. Carbon road bikes are the latest toys in the road bike segment. Bikes made from titanium and carbon metals are very light in weight and they are extremely expensive. It is wonderful to see variety road bikes in cycling races.

There is no doubt that sports require various skills. It requires lot of concentration, dedication, hard work and most importantly the right technique to play the game. Technique plays an important role in sports. Using the right technique can decide whether you excel at the game or you fail at the game. A coach can only teach you the technique of playing a game; however the player needs to master the art of playing the game by constant practice.

A technique that suits one person may necessarily not suit the other person. Each sports man develops his or her own style at the game. This style is about the ease and the comfort in achieving the required result. Two sports persons playing the same game may use the same technique differently. It takes hours of practice and dedication to develop a unique style and technique of the game. Coaches encourage the players to develop their own style based on a particular technique so that other players cannot copy the same. If the person knows the technical nuances of the game then they will have a competitive edge over the other players. New players generally lack the technique and hence they are not able to reach an optimum level in the game, however with constant practice, they grow familiar with various techniques and create a style of their own.

Nobody can learn a technique in a day or two. It requires lot of dedication from the sports person. One needs to seek proper guidance from an experienced player or a coach to understand various techniques and understand the purpose for each technique before adopting any one of them.

People, who are avid cyclists, aren’t new to the world of mountain bikes or dirt bikes. Mountain bikes are referred as dirt bikes because of the amount of dirt that they accumulate thanks to traveling through mountain trails. Mountain bikes are available in different categories and different prize ranges. A basic mountain bike will have three to four gears and will have decent seat and reasonable shock absorbers. As the bikes go to a more advanced level they have more features ad of course they are priced in the higher bracket.

One cannot use ordinary bicycles in mountainous terrains because ordinary bicycles do not have the sturdy grip in their tires, they will be unable to hold against the stones and pebbles in the mountains. Similarly the street cycles have long handles which will make it difficult for the cyclist to traverse through sharp turns. Mountain bikes are specially designed keeping the hilly terrains in mind. The shock absorbers are short and have sturdy fork springs so that the cyclist does not feel the bumps on the road. In the same way the tires are wider and have more coarse texture to avoid skidding and friction against the stones. The handle is kept short, to facilitate the navigation through quick sharp turns. The gear system in the mountainous bikes allows the cyclist to vary their speed based on the pattern of the road. Higher gears have more power compared to the lower gears.

One can buy mountainous bikes from sports showrooms or they can browse through various online sports stores to choose the best model as per their needs. One can also look at eBay for discounts on sports bikes.

Today’s generation is health conscious. They want to be fit and lean. Girls prefer to go size zero, whereas boys are aiming at achieving sleek and chiseled body. People are hitting the gym with fervor and are trying to shed weight. The new age slogan is “Fab to Flab”. The elderly generation is not behind, they too are involving themselves in power yoga, Vedic yoga and cardio exercises to stay fit.

One of the best exercises to stay fit is to cycle. Cycling helps you in toning your lower body. It accentuates your thighs and helps you to achieve an overall toned look. Cycling can be done indoors using an exercise cycle or you can cycle outdoors using a mountain bike or a bicycle. People take up cycling seriously and there are many clubs that organize cycling races. Cycling helps you to build your stamina and shape our lower body. Many people start cycling to strengthen their calves and thighs. There are various types of cycles that are available in the market. The cycles are of different sizes and have different features based on the age group that is going to use it. Kid’s cycles are smaller and have detachable pilot wheels that can be used for balancing. The grown up cycles have stronger gears and lifted up seats for more control. The handle of these cycles is different for every type. The exercise cycles have medium sized handles, whereas the road cycles have larger handles and wider coverage. The mountain bikes have the shortest handle to allow the rider to take quick turns.

Cycling everyday for 30 minutes helps the individuals to lose about 300-400 calories. Power cycling or brisk cycling will allow you to lose more calories. Cycling short distances is also a great way to cut down air pollution and noise pollution

We all have been involved in some or other form of sports in our childhood days. Sports kept us healthy and also kept the team spirit and competitive spirit glowing in us. Sports can be divided into two categories. First are the indoor sports and second are the outdoor sports. Indoor sports refer to board games like chess, checkers, carom etc. Indoor games stress more on the mental agility and hand eye co-ordination of the players. Whereas outdoor sports like soccer, cricket, tennis, badminton, base ball, basketball require the players to be physically fit and agile.

A certain percentage of individuals pursue their passion in sports as their career. Sports have made many common individuals into celebrities. People adore sports personalities. They worship them. Sports personalities almost attain a Demi-god status in the hearts of the people. However not all sports are equally rewarding. Every country has a different preference for sports. Cricket is a Religion in Asia, whereas Soccer is a religion in Europe. Depending on the preference for sports, the popularity of the sports person may vary. The World of sports is a challenging world indeed. It requires the players to be mentally and physically fit round the clock. It requires rigorous practice for long hours to achieve perfection in that particular sport. Sports Personalities try to compete against themselves. Even the champions are not satisfied by being on top; they just want to achieve more and more. There is no limit to a sportsman’s ambition. If they have set a record, they would want to break it by performing better and setting a new record which is more difficult to break.

Sports persons are much focused and they are under the constant pressure from their fans across the world to perform. It is difficult to manage such extreme pressure and only seasoned players can do it.

No one can deny the importance of sports and other physical activities. In a society where majority of the people are constantly running in order to meet their daily requirements, it is important to make them realize the importance of making sporting activities a part of their daily schedule. While participating in the several sports and exercises it is also required to follow certain measures for the safety and security. Physical activities like walking do not require special equipment as the risk of getting hurt is quite less.

Hence equipment for sporting activities range from a simple clothing item to the protective suits and equipment.

There are a various types of sports that are played around the globe. But before we understand about the types of sports, it is important to describe sports for better understanding of its types. Sport is an activity that is played with some fixed rules and regulations. For some people, sport is a profession and such people are called sportspersons and they have to follow fixed rules and regulation of the sport that they play. On the other hand, some people play sports for recreation and as one of the ways to beat stress. In such cases, the players may choose to make some modifications in the rules of the sports and these modifications may be made with the agreement of all the players.
Now, let us discuss the types of sports. There are a lot of types of sports depending on what a person takes as a basis for its classification. If we take place of playing a sport as a basis for categorization, then, there are two types of sports: indoor sports and outdoor sports. Some of the indoor games are chess, carom, playing cards and so on. Some of the outdoor games are cricket, football, badminton, lawn tennis and the likes. However, if take season as the basis of classification, then, there are sports which can be played in a particular season only. For instance there are a number of winter sports such as skiing, snowboarding, ice- skating and so on.
With the change of technology, there is another classification that has emerged such as online sports and off-line sports. There are a number of sports that are played online as well as off line depending on the interest of the players such as arcade, puzzles, action sports and so on. Some people may try to differentiate between games and sports and may not like to call online sports as sports but they name them as games. However players of on line games like to call these as sports only. Thus, there are a number of types of sports that people play. Keep playing!

You have surely heard about bikes but have you ever heard about mountain bikes? Bike is a two-wheeler vehicle which people ride on the road. On the other hand, mountain bike or mountain bike are those bikes which are suitable to be ridden in the areas such as mountains, rocky areas, steep areas and the likes. It is difficult or nearly impossible to ride road bikes in such areas since road bicycle/bikes will not be able to endure the obstacles that are there in such areas in the forms of rocks or uneven surface.
If people attempt to ride road bikes in these areas, they would not succeed and their bike/ bicycle may also get out of order. Thus, mountain bikes are designed especially in such a manner so that they can withstand the conditions of such areas easily. Normal wheels are not used in mountain bikes but the wheels with the facility of rims are used in the manufacturing of such bikes. In addition to this, the tires of these wheels are wider than the wheels used in road bikes. It is the width of the tires along with the rims which make it suitable to be ridden on uneven surface.
Earlier, mountain bikes were manufactured so that people could reach their desired destination which is in hilly areas easily using these bikes. However, its popularity has changed the scenario, mountain biking is now taken as a sport as well by a number of people. Now, people ride these bikes in mountain in order to practice for their competition. This competitive spirit in people helps them in taking it up seriously as they do so with an aim to win the game.
The competitions of mountain biking are held in different ways such as cross country biking, free ride biking, endurance biking for a day and so on. Cross country is a well known form of competition and mountain bikers wait for this competition and work really hard to win these games. So, are you planning to buy mountain bike soon?

Many people stare forlornly at the road bike hanging on the wall in the garage with dreams of long distance riding idling in their heads. Turn dreams into reality with these tips to help accomplish your dream of long distance biking.

1. Get into great condition. Spend the winter months getting into shape. Once the weather warms up start with short distances and slowly increase that distance each time you ride. Never work out so hard that you’re incapable of riding the next day.

2. Make sure you’re comfortable. Being familiar and comfortable on your bike is paramount. If the saddle just isn’t working for you on short distances, there’s no way it’ll work on longer ones. Get a new one and break it in, and take time to find a comfortable position on the bike.

3. Wear good clothing. Comfortable clothing is key to a long distance ride. You’ll only be able to tell what is comfortable after increasing your riding distance.

4. Map your route sensibly. You’re going to be able to cover much more distance on a flat route compared to a hilly one. Pick a route that you can easily accomplish for your first long distance trek.

5. Learn your gears. Longer rides require the use of gears. Switch to lower gears when going up hills to avoid burning excess energy. Maintain a consistent pedal speed and lower your gear when you feel your legs moving more slowly.

6. Eat! Eat a proper meal before leaving on longer trips to ensure you have enough carbohydrates to sustain a long energy burn. Drink plenty of fluids prior to leaving and carry a water bottle with you as well as an easy to eat snack like a protein bar or trail mix.

Long distance cycling doesn’t need to remain a far off dream. With these tips you can take that bike down from off the wall, dust off the saddle and get pedaling.

A proper diet is as important to cyclists as to any other athlete, but many cyclists overlook this important part of training. Not only is the proper diet required to maintain a high level of fitness and proper health, but it can also help you recover more easily from intense training.

Cycling builds muscle and reduces fat and because muscle weighs more than fat so using a scale to determine weight loss isn’t a good idea, you’re just swapping fat for muscle. A better indicator is to use body fat calipers or monitors. With all the lean muscle you’ll be developing as you’re training, it is important to eat as natural a diet as possible.

Whole grains, lean proteins, fats from nuts, seeds and avocados, as well as low fat dairy products should be the foods you turn to. Legumes, fresh fruits and vegetables are also important. Avoid heavily processed foods or those that are high in sodium, especially fast food.

Eat a healthy meal of whole grains or legumes and lean protein before a training session and always take along something to eat part way through. Eat again after the session, a snack that is high in protein, to help your body recover more quickly.

The proper diet will ensure that you have more energy for better workouts. A balance of carbohydrates and protein will allow you to have slow burning energy at your disposal for endurance. Don’t skip meals, as this sends all the wrong signals to your body. Instead, eat smaller but more frequent meals throughout the day.

Cyclists are often more concerned about their equipment or high performance clothing compared to their diet. Unfortunately they overlook the fact that their body needs to be in top condition to power the bicycle over long miles, and that body is best fueled with a healthy diet.

As technology improves, so does training techniques for myriad sports, including the sport of cycling. One of the newest buzz words in the training world is “lactate threshold”. This is the point in which you’ve done as much as you can, when your body just cannot go any longer.

For years, trainers stressed the importance of heart rate as the key indicator when training. It is now believed that the lactate threshold is better indicator of fitnees level. If you can raise this threshold then you can continue exercising at a much more comfortable heart rate. This is imperative to road racers who depend on stamina and endurance.

Lactate is what neutralizes the acids that build up in your body making your limbs heavy with exhaustion. The harder you workout, the faster this acid accumulates, until eventually, searing and burning pain in your limbs will force you to slow down or stop entirely. This point where you accumulate acid faster than it dissipates is your lactate threshold.

A self administered time trial is the easiest way to find your LT. Ride a three mile route without stopping with a heart rate monitor. Plan for a 20 minute warm up, then ride the three miles as fast as you can. Recover for about 10 minutes and then do the test again. Your threshold is 103 percent of your average heart rate for the two rides.

You can raise your lactic threshold by slowly but consistently pushing yourself and your limits, effectively teaching your body how to neutralizing the lactic acid more efficiently. Increasing the LT of a road cyclist is important; it can mean the difference in the amount of time they can ride comfortably. By pushing the limits of your LT you’ll extend the amount of time before your arms and legs are burning, forcing you to slow down or quit entirely.

For many, mountain biking is a true passion and they want to do all they can to improve their skill on the trails. There are, however, several myths surrounding how one should go about getting better. There’s more to mountain biking than just practice. The following will debunk some of the more common myths around mountain bike training.

Improving your cardio is one of the primary myths surrounding getting better on the trails. It is certainly important, but being more efficient on the trail is going to help you more. Building up your strength and mobility in the gym will help you be more efficient on the trails, and work on your biking skills while off the trails. You’ll have less wasted energy as your body learns to move and respond better. Perfecting your technical skills should result in better speed and momentum on the trail. In the end you’ll be able to go faster while pedaling less often.

Riding your bike more often in order to improve is another common myth. Certainly you need to ride the trails in order to practice, but at some point you’re going to master the technical skills and max out your fitness level. Strength and conditioning in the gym is going to help you more at this point, than any extra time you spend on your bike. Working in the gym will not only improve your fitness level but will give you the extra strength and endurance needed to push yourself on the trails.

Getting a bike fit is another common myth to help your trail performance. Bike fits are essential for road cycling but less so for trails. The high level of skill required by mountain biking requires that your bike fit the demands of the trails, not your mobility or lack thereof. Again, strength and mobility training are going to do more for your trail work than any bike fit, especially if you want to progress.

Spinning is the cyclist’s choice of exercise when weather prohibits road cycling. It is also a great option for getting into shape for the upcoming cycling season. Spinning is a great cardiovascular workout that also increases muscular endurance; both of these are needed by road cyclists. Cyclist or not, spinning is very popular and is a great way to get a workout.

Spinning incorporates cycling with choreography and motivational coaching, all of which are designed to give you a terrific workout. This low impact is a great aerobic exercise. A good spinning class or program will use specialized spinning bikes that are stationary, and will involve a variety of speeds and movements to not only break up the workout but to ensure your muscles get worked hard. Coaches are there to encourage you to push yourself harder and faster, and to help you visualize the terrain through which you’re pedaling.

Spinners burn on average 500 calories per 40 minute segment. Each class should have five segments to it: warm up, endurance, strength followed by interval and racing. Your fitness level will improve as you move through each class and the five intervals. Spinning is great because it can be easily adapted to your fitness level; you can push yourself as hard as you like. Beginners take part in these classes alongside professional cyclists.

If you’re considering taking up road cycling as a serious hobby, spinning is the best place to begin. Before making an investment in costly bikes and performance clothing, try spinning and see if you really like cycling at top speeds. You don’t need fancy shoes or clothes and your bike is stationary. You can build up all the technique and endurance you’ll need so that when spring arrives you can put your wheels on the pavement and ride like the wind.

Competing in a triathlon is a grueling physical process. It’s also one of the most amazing physical accomplishments you’ll ever experience. There’s just something about competing in a triathlon that gives you the “high” you seek to compete harder, faster, and better. If you are getting ready to compete in a triathlon, then you’re going to need the right bike.

Some people may think that all bikes are created equal. That’s just not the case when it comes to triathlon bikes. The bike used in a triathlon is specially designed to help you be a strong athlete. Take a look at some of the differences you’ll find in a triathlon bike as compared to a normal bike.

1.Weight: A very big difference between a triathlon bike and a regular bike is the weight. These bikes are actually designed to be lighter so you can carry your bike when you need to. A heavy bike will slow down your performance.

2.Wheels: Yes, the wheels on a triathlon bike are different. Smaller wheels make the bike move faster, without you using more muscles. This is very important for conserving your strength for the running part of the race.

3.Aerodynamics: Any drag you can eliminate will help you race faster. A triathlon bike is built to resist drag, so you can go further faster. The elbow-rest style handlebars make a big difference with the aerodynamics. Also, placement of a water bottle on a bike can assist in aerodynamics and save you energy.

One of the absolute most important things to keep in mind with a tri-bike or any triathlon equipment is to make sure it fits your body correctly. On a road bike, most of your muscle strength is used to support your torso. With a tri-bike, the amount of muscles used to support the body is eliminated. This happens when you are properly fitted for a bike.

What kind of bike will you get for your triathlon?

Going downhill on a bicycle isn’t as easy as it sounds like it should be. Certainly physically it is easier than going up hill, but many cyclists are afraid of the speed of going downhill and mistakes that are made at these top speeds can result in serious injuries.

When considering downhill sections of road races, you need to pay attention to the state of the road on these sections. Loose gravel, broken pavement, transitions from light areas to darker ones can all contribute to how well you navigate the downhill portions.

Also closely examine any turns that are on downhill sections. Consider if the turns are level or sloped, does one side of the road rise higher than the other. All these are important considerations.

When riding downhill, always keep your hands firmly on the lowest part of the handlebar. This will keep your center of gravity closest to the ground and your weight will be evenly distributed helping you maintain traction during turns and while braking.

Always stay relaxed and scan ahead while going downhill. Keeping your eyes on the bottom of the hill will help you keep a steady line all the way down, and staying relaxed will keep the tension out of your body allowing you to move more fluidly.

Don’t wait until the middle of a turn to brake, and when you do don’t ride the brakes. Begin to slow down prior to any turns, and remember to lean the bike rather than your body, into the turns. When exiting a turn, gently lift the bike back to a straight position.

Going downhill at top speed doesn’t have to be scary or dangerous. Just paying attention to the road, any turns and your technique will have you flying down hills and around turns just like the pros.

Cyclists in northern parts of the country don’t let the weather slow them down. Rain, sleet and snow are no deterrent to these dedicated cyclists. No more clearly is the love of the sport seen in the Arrowhead 135 Winter Ultra Race, which is held yearly at the end of January or early February, in northern Minnesota.

This 135 mile race is through mother nature’s worst, and half the racers are usually on bikes. The race this year is the seventh annual race, to be held on January 31, and of the 140 contestants half of them will be peddling their way through the snow. The race route goes from International Falls to Fortune Bay, near the city of Tower, Minnesota.

This multi-day race begins on Monday morning at 7 a.m. and finishes by Wednesday evening. Racers are attending from 26 states and seven different countries. This year’s race will see past winter ultra racers such as Alaska’s Jeff Oatley, Minnesota’s own John Strokamp, Ray Sanchez from California and several world class contestants from Brazil.

In addition, this year’s race has 15 women scheduled to attend. This is the highest number ever. Last year the riders finished the 135 mile race after 16 hours in -10 degrees Fahrenheit.

With temperatures that have been known to fall as low as -60 degrees Fahrenheit, the Arrowhead 135 is known as one of the world’s toughest winter ultra marathon races. Racers are required to carry their own supplies of food and water, and no outside support is allowed to the racers. Midway along the trail is a cabin which the racers may use for a hot meal, shower and some rest.

This race is only open to a limited number of people and the spots fill up fast. The next time you look out your window and then forlornly at your bicycle, think of the frozen folks who ride 135 miles in the country’s worst possible winter weather.

Cyclocross is a specialized form of bicycle racing with events held in the traditional off season for cycling. Held in the winter and fall, cyclocross races involve several laps around a small course comprised of pavement, turf, inclines, wooded trails and obstacles that require the rider to dismount, get over or under or around the barrier with their bike, and then continue on mounted.

Cyclocross may sound like a bizarre combination of rugged terrain hiking, cycling and mountain biking; that’s exactly what it is. This wild and crazy sport has, however, been around since the 1940’s and the first world championship for cyclocross was held in Paris a short ten years later.

More popular in Europe, it is nevertheless, catching on in North America. The bicycles are similar to road racing bikes; they are lightweight with skinny tires. They need to be light in order to be easily carried across obstacles. Riders are often forced to carry their bicycles on their shoulders or back as they struggle up steep, muddy slopes or across barriers.

Unlike other forms of cycle racing, cyclocross riders are allowed to change bikes in mid course. Their crew can clean and fix up one bike while the rider continues on the course with another.

Cyclocross riders may be a certain kind of crazy, but they’re also incredibly fit. Not only must they have top notch riding skills, but they must have the strength and endurance required of both mountain bikers and extreme hikers. These riders are also a rare breed; they’re tough, resilient and leave all excuses behind.

Cyclocross, an extreme form of cycling, is certainly not for everybody. For those who do love the sport, there is little else on their minds but winning and the next race. It separates the men from the boys in the world of cycling, and while few things compare to days long road bike competitions, cyclcocross is a different breed of cycling entirely.

There are so many different makes and models of mountain bikes on the market, and the dizzying array of colors and styles and accessories can make choosing between them difficult. Traditionally, buying a mountain bike meant going to a bike shop and selecting from the myriad mass produced bikes. Enter the custom made mountain bike: for true mountain bike enthusiasts, a custom made bike is the only bike worth owning.

Mountain bikes that come off the production line are similar to one another, and the only real options for customization are few. A custom bike, however, can be made to exactly suit the demands of the owner as well as their body type. Custom bikes offer the ability for the buyer to select the components they want as well as fulfilling any specific tubing requirements they may have.

There are two different approaches to ordering a custom made mountain bike. Some builders will make a bike to the customer’s exact specifications while others will take measurements and ask a series of questions and then build a bike that the customer will hopefully like.

The downside to custom ordering a mountain bike is the time it takes for them to be built, and the price. It can take months from initial measurements until completion for a custom made mountain bike. And they are expensive; cheaper models might be around $4,500.00 but usually they are many hundreds more dollars based on specific customer requirements and specialized components.

Despite the price and lengthy wait, custom made mountain bikes are becoming increasingly popular. There is an entire trade show devoted to the art of custom made bikes. True mountain bike aficionados know that the only real mountain bike is one that has been tailor made to your specifications, and most of them are willing to pay for one.

Cycling is something that can be learned at a very early age, but even the youngest of riders should be encouraged to wear a properly fitting cycling helmet. Though a helmet won’t prevent an accident, they can certainly cut down on the chances of head injuries. The following are some facts about cycling helmets to help encourage you to wear one.

Cycling helmets greatly reduce the chance of serious head and brain injury, by up to 80 percent.

Adults wear cycling helmets more often then children. Look for cool helmet graphics to help encourage kids to wear them regularly. Children have by far many more accidents than adults; wearing helmets should be a mandatory part of cycling for children.

More than 90 percent of all cycling related deaths occurred with riders who were not wearing helmets.

Crashes with cars are often deadly, and accidents occur more often within one mile of the cyclist’s home. They occur most frequently in the early evening when the sunlight is low, on side streets and in intersections.

There are two types of helmet: multiple impact and high impact. Multiple impact helmets are designed for minor or low speed impacts whereas high impact helmets are designed to crush and absorb the force of a high speed impact. Always replace your helmet after any impact.

The proper fit of a cycling helmet is imperative to adequately protect the rider. It should be worn level on the head and always keep the straps snugly fastened.

Only purchase helmets that have an approval stamp from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. Any others may not meet the commission’s high level of safety standards.

There is no doubt that wearing a helmet is not only the best way to protect yourself against injury while cycling, but it is also the smart thing to do. Always ensure children are wearing properly fitted cycling helmets as well.

Dogs provide a real source of danger to cyclists, and encounters with dogs can often lead to injury and damage to the bike. Cyclists can often leave dogs eating their dust if the dog darts out from behind in hot pursuit, but if the dog is waiting to ambush you there’s little you may be able to do to prevent a collision.

If you crash as a result of an encounter with a dog, either from colliding with the dog directly or losing control and falling while trying to evade collision, the dog’s owner is liable for any damage to you or your bike. If, however, you intentionally or accidentally injure a dog then you can face potential damages.

A greater danger than crashing into the dog is an accident that comes as a result of trying to avoid the dog. If the cyclist is hurt due to a crash with a car while tying to avoid a dog, the question of who is liable becomes much more muddled. The safer option may well be to stop and encourage the owner to leash the dog.

If an owner fails to control their dog and you are bitten, the outcome depends on which state you’re in. Many states allow one bite before holding the owner liable, while others consider a bite to be as aggressive as snapping and lunging, all of which can result in legal action against the owner.

If the dog goes so far as to attack you, you are within your rights to defend yourself. You are allowed to defend yourself but not to retaliate; and keep your self-defense within reasonable limits.

Many people believe in using firm verbal commands to send the dog home, while others advocate stopping and keeping the bike between you and the dog. No matter how you deal with it, always report unleashed and aggressive dogs to the authorities.

A paceline is a popular formation for a group rides but all too often these formations become counter productive because cyclists are never taught the proper way to effectively ride a paceline. It doesn’t matter if you’re in double or single formation; the following are some tips to help you effectively ride a paceline.

Always keep the pace. The primary mistake made when a rider pulls to the front is that they want to show off by picking up the speed. The aim to a paceline is to keep everybody in formation. By taking a pull when out front you’re more likely to scatter the group rather than keep it together.

If you’re in the middle of the pack and you feel like you’re nearly on top of the rider ahead of you, rather than brake make a lighter stroke or two to adjust your speed. If you need to slow down, sit up and let the wind slow you down. Air braking is the safest way to slow down when in a group. If you do need to brake, then feather brake. Continue pedaling while gently squeezing the breaks.

Riding proactively will help keep you and your formation safe. Wanting to stare at the wheel in front of you is natural but unsafe. If the rider ahead has trouble you’ll have no time to adjust. Instead, keep your eyes ahead of the lead rider.

If you start to feel tired, wait a few turns before pulling again. Pull off and drifting to the back will signal the others that you need a few minutes to conserve your energy. This will benefit everybody by not having to slow down to accommodate your fatigue.

Riding a paceline is a great way to train and get a good workout. Following the above tips will help you be a productive member of the formation without creating mistakes and earning dirty looks from your fellow riders.

To anybody who has ridden a bicycle, the exercise benefits are easily apparent. What is less clear are the hidden health benefits that come as a result of being an active cyclist. You don’t need the latest and the greatest in cycling equipment to reap the health rewards, but being aware of all the benefits should certainly encourage you to keep on biking.

Cycling is a great low-impact workout for those who want a change of pace from the treadmill or stationary bike. Set aside for a moment the fact that a bicycle is a transportation device, and consider the muscles that benefit from a workout. Hips, buttocks, thighs and legs will all benefit from cycling. Muscles in these areas will become more defined as fat is quickly burned and replaced with lean muscle. While running might burn more calories, for those with joint pain or impact sensitivity, cycling is a viable option for burning fat and calories.

Using a bicycle in your workout regime can help you lower your blood pressure, lose weight and to reap the rewards that come from being fit and at a healthy weight. Cycling provides a good aerobic workout which increases the blood flow to and from your heart thereby increasing the health of your heart.

Cycling is also great at reducing stress and tension. A good cycling workout can help alleviate all the stresses of the day, especially if you use your bicycle for commuting to and from work.

While the health benefits of cycling are many, always be sure to include a good warm up and cool down when using your bike for a workout. Avoid injury by listening to your body and stopping when you get tired or sore. Always wear protective gear if biking outdoors and always be a safe and courteous biker.

Unless you’re a professional cyclist or have tons of disposable income with which to hire the best cycling trainers, amateur cyclists often have to go without valuable training advice simply because they do not have access to it. Proven tips, techniques and training schedules are often only available to those in cycling clubs or professionals. Now, however, there is a new breed of training program available on the Internet for budding cyclists.

There are a variety of online cyclist training programs available ranging from free to paying a monthly subscription or flat fee. Before you type in your PayPal information, there are a few things you should look for in an online cyclist program.

First of all, do your homework on the training program being offered. Look for reviews that might indicate the validity of it, or that speak to the success or non-success of its program. Also look into who is endorsing the training program. Professional cyclists will affiliate themselves with quality and legitimate online training programs whereas mediocre programs copied from the latest issue of Bicycling Magazine will be all flash and no substance.

Look at the training program itself. High end programs will consist of weeks or months worth of pre-planned training sessions including a mix of climbing, sprints, endurance work, cadence training as well as recovery days. Good programs will allow you to tailor your program to accommodate specific needs like long-distance biking or racing.

What kind of support offered by the program is important; before you pay for a service be sure to find out if there are real life trainers you can contact to ask questions.

No matter your level of experience, a good online cycling training program can help you improve. For newbies, the training program can help them avoid common mistakes and pitfalls while training and for those who are more experienced it can save you time and effort in having to design your own training plan.

Electric motocross bikes are a great alternative to their gas guzzling counterparts. These green machines are more environmentally friendly, and as technology has caught up and made them as powerful as the gas burning models, more and more people have chosen to buy one. As the demand has grown, so too have prices come down and no longer are these bikes a novelty, they’re a practical and affordable way to enjoy the sport of motocross.

The advantages to an electric motocross bike are many. To begin with, they emit much less noise pollution compared to the gas models. These nearly silent machines offer all the thrills of traditional models, but without the deafening roar. Fuel burning models have long been banned in certain areas due to the noise, so silent machines can go where they cannot.

Electric models are much lighter than fuel burning models. Without the need to carry so much fuel, the electric motocross bikes are very light, weighing in at about half the weight of a traditional bike. These lighter bikes have been re-engineered to accommodate different stresses on the frame, wheels and shocks. Even though these bikes are much lighter, they’re still powerful.

Some electric bike models are equipped with removable batteries. This means that you no longer need to carry along gas canisters to refill your bike. Simply pop in additional batteries and off you go. The life of the battery can be extended by the use of the half power switch which reduces the top speed of the bike thereby extending the life of the battery.

Maintenance on an electric motocross bike is much simpler. With no fuel driven parts, no clutch and no gears, these bikes are simple to maintain and generally less expensive to repair.

With all the pros to recommend an electric motocross bike over traditional gas burning models, it is only a matter of time before the electric ones become mainstream.

Off road dirt biking is an exhilarating adrenaline rush that is easily addictive. Once you try it, you’ll be hooked. Beginners often believe that all they need to do is buy a dirt bike, hop on and start spinning dirt. There is much more to it, however, in order to practice this sport in a safe and conscientious manner.

There are a variety of dirt bike clubs located across the country; finding one and joining is the single best thing a new rider can do. Once you belong to a club you have access to a wealth of information such as events, track and trail location information, safety procedures and more. Plus, you’ll be amongst similarly minded folk, all who love the sport. Experienced riders are often willing to pass along tips and pointers to more junior members of their club.

Even if you do join a club, do your research. There’s more to dirt biking than just hauling off your bike into the country and letting it rip over some poor farmer’s field. In fact, not only is that illegal but it is dangerous and downright rude. Always find legitimate tracks and courses on which to ride. Organized events are easy to find online, and many are open to the public. The course level will be indicated, and all safety protocols will be enforced.

No matter when or where you decide to take your bike out, always wear appropriate protection. Proper clothing with long sleeves and pant legs is essential as are a helmet, gloves and goggles. Many dirt bikers choose to wear body padding as well, in case of a spill.

Dirt bike riding is fun, but remember that you’re on a high powered machine. Safety should be your primary concern, no matter what level your experience. Keep your machine in top repair, wear proper protection and ride on sanctioned tracks and trails and you’ll be able to enjoy this sport for years.

Cycling, in whatever form, is a great form of exercise. This low impact activity burns calories quickly and can tone the whole body. Mountain biking, road biking or racing, all forms of cycling can be enjoyable but getting ready for a season of biking is more than just hopping on a bike and riding off. The following are a few general training tips for any cyclist.

Knowing, and listening to, your limit is highly important. Anybody can ride for miles in one direction but you need to get back again. Listening to your body and building up stamina and muscle is important so that you avoid injury. Make sure that you cycle regularly when in training, but give your body time off to recuperate.

Staying hydrated is important in cycling just as it is for many sports. Dehydration can seriously impede a training session and can call an early end to a race or outing that you’ve planned. Lack of fluids will sap your body of energy quickly and could leave you miles from home without any clear way of returning. Always keep your water bottle full and carry a spare if possible.

Regularly inspecting your bicycle will stave off the worst of mechanical failures. Carefully and closely examining the wheels will indicated if the tread is running low, if the pressure is too low or if there are cracks in the tires. If any of these is the case, fix it prior to setting out on a training session. Look for any bend in the frame and ensure that the gears are working properly.

Cycling is a great form of exercise and an enjoyable way to pass some time. No matter your skill level, be it amateur or pro, always follow common sense training tips and you’ll get the most out of ever training session and every trip.

The arrival of fall traditionally signals nearly the end of mountain bike season in many parts of the world. The onset of winter, however, doesn’t mean that you need to put your mountain bike away for the next several months. Mountain biking can be enjoyed during the winter as long as a few sensible precautions are taken. The following are some suggestions to help you enjoy mountain biking even during the winter.

Personal protection while mountain biking is paramount, no less so in the winter. Icy trail conditions can be hazardous and mishaps can be dangerous if you’re not adequately protected. Arm, leg and feet protection is necessary but so is head and face protection. Padding, helmets and guards are all mandatory for the winter mountain biker.

Protection against the cold is also a concern. Perspiration and loss of heat during winter biking can lead to serious issues. Bulky clothing will only hinder your movement so clothing that is breathable to allow perspiration and moisture to dry while still being warm is essential. Gloves should always be worn, not only to protect from the cold but also to ensure a firm grip on the handles. Choose gloves that are thin enough to maintain good control of the bike but that are also warm enough to protect your hands.

Inspecting the bike’s tires is important during regular biking season, but more so during the winter. Tire pressure must be at the appropriate level for your bike, and the treads should be inspected. Replacing tires that are cracked or if the tread is reduced below suggested levels will help ensure your bike is easily controlled.

Winter mountain biking can be a fun and exhilarating way to enjoy the outdoors. Choose trails where the snow is compacted and that aren’t too icy. Then just bundle up and out you go.

Road biking is an exciting sport that allows you the thrill of speed and adventure while enjoying the outdoors. Deciding to take up this sport, either as a hobby or in order to race, begins with purchasing a road bike. The following are some guidelines to help you become familiar with road bikes and to help you find the best bike for your needs.

Advances in technology have helped to modify these bikes into more sturdy and durable machines. Frames have become lighter, gear systems have been tweaked to allow for easier transition through various speeds, and modified seats allow for better seating and comfort.

The wheels on a road bike are narrow but high pressured. They are designed for road use and are engineered to offer the least possible resistance on pavement. The shocks are also designed for smooth riding, so if you choose to take your bike cross country you’re going to feel every bump and stone your roll over.

Frames on road bikes are lightweight; the lighter the frame the more expensive the bike. Unless you plan on racing, there is little need to invest in the lightest frame available. Aluminum is a popular frame material and the most expensive bikes have titanium in the frames.

Handlebars on road bikes are typically aligned to allow riders to sit in an upright position or to allow riders to reduce wind resistance by hunching over. Both the brakes and gear operations are located on the handlebars. 10 speed gear mechanics used to be the norm where road bikes were concerned, but today’s bikes can have up to 27 different gear combinations.

The sky is the limit when it comes to prices for road bikes. When choosing one for your needs, always ask lots of questions of the sales clerk and make sure that the bike is properly fitted to you. Then just hop on and ride off into the sunset.

Urban cyclists face many challenges, yet with growing green awareness and the demand for housing that is closer to business sectors, the number of people who want to cycle to work is growing at an astronomical rate. As the number of urban cyclists increases, so too does the demand for specialized bicycles that fit this lifestyle.

Enter folding bicycles. Folding bicycles have the lightest frame in the world and fold up easily for jumping onto buses or subways. Perfect for urban commuters, these bicycles take just seconds to fold up and weigh just a few pounds.

Made with magnesium alloys, the frames on these bicycles are lighter than aluminum and won’t rust. They’re also durable and won’t easily buckle or bend. There are many other advantages to folding bicycles such as not taking up much room when not in use, you can save money on parking and car related expenses, they come in a variety of colors and styles, they’re less likely to be stolen than traditional bicycles as you can carry them with you and you’re helping the planet.

Folding bicycles are not only a great way to commute to work but you also get a great workout twice a day. Most folding bicycles come with a variety of gears making riding them easy, but there’s no doubt that you’re still riding a bicycle. When you arrive at your destination just fold it up, tuck it under your arm and store it behind the door of your office. Most of these bicycles can be folded in under 20 seconds.

The next time you’re considering how you can reduce your carbon footprint, consider a folding bicycle. They’re very inexpensive compared to toll and parking fees, as well as car related expenses. There are several models available with more sure to come as the demand rises for these green friendly transportation devices.

When we think of physical fitness and exercising to achieve our fitness goals, strength training is often the first thing that comes to mind. However, we also need to examine and enhance our stamina. Stamina exercises are just as important as strength training. Many sports, such as cycling, running and so on, require a higher stamina level. This enhanced stamina will improve performance for an entire competition or training session.

Cardiovascular (Cardio) Exercises

It does not matter what type of sport or physical activity you engage in; or which group of muscles you want to focus, your stamina level is based on your cardio fitness. You should engage in exercises such as swimming, ellipticals and running as part of your fitness routine, as these will help you increase your cardio stamina levels.

High Repetitions on Low Weights

When you are concentrating on strength training, there are a lot of higher weights with lower number of repetitions involved. However, you should reverse this to increase your stamina level. Try working out with half your strength training weights at twice as many repetitions. You will be increasing your exertion level and time.

Workout Consistently

Because stamina is a building block concept, every time you make improvements during your workouts it has a cumulative effect. If you don’t work out consistently or there are long periods of time between workouts, you are effectively starting over each workout. You should be training and working out not just once a week, but many times a week. Try to stick to the same schedule. However, if you are just starting, don’t do to many days at first — work up to a full schedule. If you start out too fast in a short period, you risk burning out or too tired to stick to your schedule.

Ahhh the lovely siren’s call of junk food — candy, cake, soda, chips — almost every one of us loves junk food. However junk food does not love us in return. These types of foods can play havoc all over our bodies’ energy level. These types of foods are digested very fast, causing that “energy burst”. But we all know what follows that energy — that subsequent crash.

Athletes or other people who are trying to increase their stamina either for competition or just everyday fitness and exercise can take heed of a few diet tips to increase overall healthiness as well as stamina levels.

• Avoid huge meals. This is the body getting too much fuel/food too quickly. Eating large amounts of food and drink is detrimental because the body just cannot digest all that food as quickly as it is being consumed. Guess what? What the body cannot digest, will get stored as fat and that, as we know, is not very healthy. Also, digestion takes energy so a higher level of digestion will cause low stamina and fatigue.

• Not eating enough. We all think that our diets should be monitored and minimal to lose weight or achieve our weight goals; however, eating only one or two meals per day is bad for your stamina level. This is especially important when considering breakfast. The human body will resort to what is known as “starvation mode” if it is not properly fed. The body is being deprived and will react by storing fat and reducing energy levels.

• To increase your energy and stamina levels it is highly recommended that you eat frequent, smaller meals all throughout the day. Your body will have an increased, stable level of stamina and energy. In addition, there is less likelihood that your body will be storing excess fat.

To build lean, strong muscle mass there has to be a combination of caloric intake and a strengthening regime. Interestingly, this strength training diet requires a high number of calories for both tissue building and fuel. It is important that these calories are the correct type.

Carbohydrates

Carbs are the energy source required for strength training. Carbohydrates create the body’s fuel that supplies energy required for the intense type of fitness training. Carbs create glycogen which muscles require for longer, more intense workouts for strength training. If you do not consume enough of this fuel, you will lose energy and you won’t be able to power through the muscle contraction type of working out. Research indicates that about 500 to 600 grams of carbohydrates are required to keep the glycogen levels high.

Protein

Protein is considered to be the building blocks of muscle. Subsequently those on strength training programs will need to take in higher levels of protein that those who exercise at a lower level. People engaging in high-level strength training need about 0.6 to 0.8 grams of protein per pound of weight.

Fat

Believe it or not, fat is important to a strength training diet. However only a small amount is required — less than 30 percent of total caloric intake should be fat.

Water

We should all be consuming those eight glasses of water per day that is optimal for good health; however those on high-energy training programs will need even more. To remain hydrated, you should try to drink about 16 ounces of water about two hours before your workout. Then during your workout, you should be drinking between four to eight ounces about every 15 or so minutes. After your workout, drink another two cups to replace fluids lost during your workout.

Recently researchers at Indiana University recognized that athletes receive substantial gains in performance after training at higher altitudes. The athletes do have a heavier or elevated breathing level at sea level after altitude training; but this is temporary. The study also indicates that this is a good reason athletes should train at sea level for one week to 10 days before a big competition.

Endurance athletes — especially those at an elite level — often train at higher altitudes. This high-altitude training lets the body create more red blood cells due to the lower levels of oxygen found at high altitudes. This increase in red blood cells lets athletes’ bodies get more oxygen to the muscles when they return to sea level for competitions.

This altitude training — sometimes called altitude camp — is several weeks of training at altitudes preferably higher than 8,000 feet above sea level. Because there are so few of these high elevation locations, many athletes train at more intermediate levels.

There are also alternatives to actually going to a higher altitude. These include hypoxicator masks, simulation rooms and simulation tents. In these training scenarios the barometric pressure is the same as sea level, but oxygen levels are reduced.

Other studies by the same researchers at Indiana University also looked at whether athletes, through training at altitude, use less oxygen upon the return to sea level. The research indicates there were no improvements on this aspect. This may be due to the high rate of breathing that the athletes experience.

Some athletes train only at high altitudes and then compete at sea level. However, there is the possibility that their training is not as effective due to the lower oxygen levels. The muscles required for high performance training may not be getting as much oxygen for optimal performances.

You’ve decided to take up bike racing — maybe even thinking of doing a triathlon. You’ve spent too much time on the couch just watching the racers, and now it’s time to actually “hit the road.” Do you know the bike that will suit you the best, and yet still give you the performance you want. You should really recognize your needs and skill level before plunking down a whole bunch of dollars.

You should examine the level of bike you really want to do. Are you just going to ride to lose a few pounds and get into shape? Or do you truly want to race in that triathlon and win?

The best place to start is through a visit to a local bike shop to determine the best size of bike for you. Then go buy that same size bike through a garage sale or some other type of second-hand outlet. This will let you start getting in shape without a huge outlay of money. This bike should still be tuned up and have a comfortable seat so you don’t get discouraged. You can ride this bike for practice until you are absolutely sure this is your new sport and then you can go out and get a higher-performance model.

How is your skill level on a bike? Your skill level will improve once you understand the proper use of your gears and proper pedal speed. You can get instruction and help through a local bike club or even classes from the local bike shop. Don’t leave out the Internet for reading up on training and riding tips as well.

When you are ready to purchase that “dream bike” do your research. Read articles, talk to other bike enthusiasts and so on. And don’t forget you can get high-performance bikes used that can save you a lot of money.

It seems we see all sorts of examples of bad sportsmanship these days. Whether it is the media or professional athletes that we see, there seems to be a corresponding increase in this type of poor behavior within youth sports.

How can we as parents and/or coaches try to instill a sense of sportsmanship, manners on the field and reduce the “win at any cost” attitude?

First, we need to be role models. We should always speak kindly and encouragingly of all the participants, including the opponents. If you are at a live sporting event or just watching sports on television, don’t criticize or demean an athlete or referee.

Make sure you have the right mind-set if you have your child in a sport. Is your child participating because you want to give them a sense of fun, self-worth and skills via this athletic endeavor; or do you want to create the next Olympian at any cost?

Make sure you set rules and boundaries. It’s your job to teach good sportsmanship. If you see a negative action by your child, you should discuss this with him or her. If the coach is encouraging negative behavior, you need to discuss these issues with the coach in private, not on the field.

Use watching sports as a teaching tool. If you see an athlete “showboating” or exhibiting bad sportsmanship, ask your child to voice his or her opinion and use this as a learning experience. Perhaps you can explain that these behaviors can come with a cost, such as technical fouls and similar repercussions. Try to listen more than lecture and allow your child to think the situation through. Guide them gently to understanding how unsportsmanlike behavior can be detrimental, not only to an individual but the team and sport in general.

Physical fitness enthusiasts are constantly on the look out for new ways to change up their routines to keep them on the right track. This keeps the body on its toes and pushes the body’s limits as well. Have you considered mixed martial arts training? Probably not, but it is a great way to push your body’s limits and boundaries.

While most of us probably do not actually want to engage in a mixed martial arts bout; however the training is considered to be very intense because it engages and works every muscles as well as building stamina. This stamina level needs to be very high because the martial arts athlete may need to outlast pain during a fight.

While you probably will never need or want to feel the pain of an actual fight, you can train like a fighter through three easy exercises:

Burpees
It’s a funny name for a serious exercise, but it’s a whole body workout. You start in a squatting position, hands in front of you on the floor. Simply kick your feet back. You should now be in a push-up position. Then return to the original position. Do this as quickly as you can.

Mountain Climbing
No you don’t have to go scale the face of Everest. Just assume a push up position and then move your legs down and up — simulating a mountain climbing move. Many martial artists claim this is one of the best abdominal workouts.

Jump Rope
Yes, believe it or not, this is a great all over exercise that builds stamina, leg strength and balance. As you build up your jump rope skills try adding in actions such as double jumps (two per rope revolution) arm crosses or jumping on one leg. This increase the difficulty of this seemingly simple exercise.

Believe it or not, cardiovascular training techniques used by martial artists can be used across the board for anyone wanting to enhance their training — elite athlete or weekend fitness players.

Martial artists have found that their fights are more successful, not because they are stronger, but rather when their stamina or cardio strength was high. This allows athletes to maintain high energy levels, as well as being able to continue thinking coherently for strategy.

Here are a few types of exercise plans you can introduce into your own fitness routines:

Aerobic or Long-Slow Distance Conditioning
This is exercising for approximately 45 minutes while maintaining your maximum heart rate at 60 to 70 percent. These types of exercise include bike riding and running. Another positive about these types of exercises is they help reduce body fat as well as provide weight control aspects.

Anaerobic or Threshold Conditioning
These exercises entail a shorter time span, but a high heart rate. You want to go for about 20 minutes of activity with a heart rate at about 90 percent. A stair step machine or treadmill set on a “rolling hills” setting is a good exercise for this type of conditioning.

Sprint or Speed Training
This can be one of two types of training (or both). One is interval training where your exercise period is longer than your recovery period. Repetition training is short and faster with much longer recovery times in between. With either type you are trying to get your heart rate up to 95 to 100 percent for short periods of time, recover and repeat.

The goal of these type of exercise is to get your body trained to work hard at maximum levels while experience lower oxygen levels. Your system will also be better able to remove lactic acid from your muscles.

There are many ways you can improve your stamina. You may be an athlete training, or you just want a little more energy for your everyday routine. However, you should probably look at factors that may be causing your low stamina levels. You should look at your existing exercise routine, how well you are sleeping, your stress level and your overall diet. These factors can be inter-related: For instance if your energy level is low due to stress, changing your diet may not produce the results you are looking for.

Sleep is also an important factor in stamina levels. If you are not getting the proper amount of sleep each day, your body is not rested and has no energy reserves.

Exercise needs to be fit into your schedule if you are not already doing so. This is especially important if you have a sedentary job. Get up, talk a walk. Optimally you should do some sort of exercise for about 30 to 45 minutes each day.

Make sure you are eating three healthy meals each day along with your daily exercise. Try not to skip meals — breakfast is an especially important meal that should never be skipped. Skipping meals actually reduces energy and stamina because the body is trying to make up for the lack of nutrition. You can also eat a lot of smaller meals throughout the day.

There are many food items that can help improve stamina and energy. Interestingly a great energy drink is hot water, lemon and honey. Fresh juices and plenty of water are also great for stamina and energy.

Include foods that contain natural carbohydrates such as whole grains, yams and oatmeal. Avoiding foods with high amounts of processed sugars such as chips, candy and sodas is also advisable. These refined foods will cause you to actually feel slow and sluggish.

Many of us want to “get fit. It may be due to a New Year’s resolution or just the realization that we need to get rid of a few pounds. Others of us may just be advancing to the next level of our exercise program. However, we all know that it’s really easy to talk about getting fit – doing it is a completely different animal.

Setting goals that are realistic and obtainable will make getting fit much easier. Here’s some ideas and tips to help you set those goals.

• Make sure you are grounded in reality. Many of us see those images presented to us in the media and want to be that runway model. The truth is most of us do not have the money, time or even ability to achieve that rail-thin body. Determine realistically what you need to achieve to gain health and happiness.

• Make sure your motives are logical. Your expectations should be to improve yourself both physically and mentally. If you are trying to change for any other reasons, such as to please another person, your goals are more than likely not going to be met.

• Examine your preferences, family history and your past as well. If you truly hate exercise and would really rather eat, take this into consideration when determining your goals.

• Make small changes. Don’t try to do everything all at once. Perhaps make a single change each week — for instance, stop drinking sodas one week, eliminate chips the next and so on.

• Put the scale in the closet and think about how you are feeling. What’s the point of losing weight if you are completely miserable? Again, you should work toward your goals gradually and achieve goals that are realistic and will bring you a happier mental state.

Anxiety can become a distraction if you are experiencing it before a competition or other sporting event in which you are participating. You should be celebrating and enjoying your skills as an athlete and anxiety can completely annihilate those feelings.

Emotional feelings of anxiety may bring feelings of worry, tension and doom. The physical effects include fatigue, sweating, increased heart rate and weakness. All of these anxiety symptoms will not be a positive effect for your sport performance. Some anxiety is normal, but we can try to eliminate a completely debilitating level that will not allow peak performance.

Breathing. Deep, rhythmic breathing is essential in both practice and performance. Combine this breathing with some simple meditation.

• Relax both your mind and muscles together. Take a moment to release your body’s tension from the top of your head to your toes one section at a time. Work at making sure that those areas of your body that feel especially tense gets extra attention.

Visualize. Imagine in your mind’s eye your perfect, peak performance before your event. Imagine every move and step that you want to do during your performance. This visualization can be done during breaks in the event as well. For instance, if you are playing basketball, you can visualize yourself making a perfect basket.

Do not allow yourself to think negatively. Use positive self-talk whenever you are practicing and especially during your sports events. Use encouraging words and sentences as mental fuel. Do not dwell on any mistakes. Dwell instead on the positive things that you do and have done, or about all the hours of practice you have put in.

Be sure to practice the anti-anxiety coping skills each and every time you train or practice your sport. You will get into the habit of reducing your anxiety.

It may seem that weightlifting and yoga are diametrically opposed. It may not seem possible that you could meld the two together, but in fact, they can be complementary to each other.

Think about it, weightlifting causes the muscles to shorten and harden; meanwhile yoga lengthens the inner body as well as strengthening it. Weights create a muscle system that is powerful and can exert power over short periods of time. Yoga focuses on range of motion strength. Because of these differences and strengths, many trainers recommend the combination of the two exercises — especially for weight training athletes to experience better recovery.

Proper alignment is important to weightlifting and it is equally so with yoga. You can develop correct biomechanical alignment through yoga, especially the Anusara and Iyengar styles that emphasize alignment.

Yoga gives the weightlifter recovery time as a gift. As a weightlifter don’t go straight into the high-level end of yoga just because you are used to self-challenges. Take it slow and you’ll reduce the possibility of injury.

Yoga is a patient journey. You may feel your body is resisting the stretching and yoga movements.

Ask your yoga instructor for guidance for poses that will increase joint stability. Also ask him or her to make sure your alignment is correct. In turn, your form during your weightlifting session will be improved due to your body obtaining a fuller range of motion.

Ask your teacher to show you yoga poses that will stretch the muscle groups that are most trained by your weightlifting. When these muscles groups are properly stretched, their strength is more functional. These stretches will also prevent your muscles from becoming to hard and stiff.

Yoga includes restorative poses. You definitely want to gain the knowledge of these that can help your muscles and body heal/

Power and acceleration in sports can be improved through speed training. This type of training involves interval workouts.

Speed drills should be done after an initial 10-minute light speed run or jog and some dynamic stretching. Keep in mind that speed drills are high intensity exercises that require a lot of time for recover. As such, it is advised that speed drill session should be limited to two days per week with at least a day of recovery time between any speed sessions.

Plyometric Training
Bounding is used in addition with a strength-training program to improve your sprint speed and power. Begin by jogging to initiate a forward momentum. After a few yards of jogging, push off with your right foot very forcefully. At the same time drive your left arm forward. Repeat with the opposite arm and leg. Continue this action for 10 seconds after which you should return to a slow jog. Jog for 50 seconds. This routine should be repeated five times.

Hill Climbs
Maximum power, strength and speed are built by running up steep hills. If you can, make this a partner drill. Working this drill with someone else increases the feeling of competition and you’ll probably push yourself harder. Find a mountain or hill whose steepness will allow a 45 to 60 second run. First start out by jogging for a few seconds. Then sprint up the hill as quickly as you can. Return to the bottom at a slow job. Repeat this routine five times.

Accelerations
Mark out 100-yard straight-line distances. Also mark halfway points on this distance. Begin your sprint. Gradually increase your speed until you are at full speed at the halfway mark. Continue your sprint until you reach the 100-yard line, where you will reduce to a slow jog. Allow recovery time between sprints.

Many athletes work on a system of muscle confusion training. Muscles confusion is the theory that if we keep the muscles guessing or “confused” we will eliminate or avoid reaching plateaus where there is minimal fitness gains.

Essentially muscle confusion training varies repetition, intensity and muscles groups and should achieve a higher rate of muscle growth. This muscle growth may also be achieved over shorter time periods because of the alternative schedule.

Every other day, work alternating groups of muscle, using weights. For example, work the back and chest on the first day. On the second day, work out your gluteus and legs. On day three you may be working your biceps and triceps Two to three sets of exercises should be done for optimal results. And on your last set of reps, push to exhaustion or to the point where your lifting is no longer technically correct. This will cause muscle fatigue.

Do yoga at least once a week. This will tone and strengthen your muscles isometrically. Muscle confusion is increased by yoga due to yoga’s increasing flexibility and lean muscles.

Muscle confusion workouts should include aerobic exercises such as kickboxing and plyometrics. Cardio exercises such as these will also reduce body fat.

Your abdominal section should be worked on several times a week. This will build up your core strength as well as being an essential part of a muscle confusion work out. Be sure to do both standing and seated contraction exercises.

Between exercises, be sure to include a 60 to 90 second rest and recovery period. During this time you should keep moving to stay warm and reduce the possibility of injury. Proper warm up and stretching before your workouts is essential. And extended period of stretching exercises should be included at least weekly in your routine.

Man, if not all, athletes want to increase muscle endurance. This is a state where muscles can execute repetitions with accompanying resistance over long periods of time. Sports that require that its athletes and participants have high muscles endurance include swimming, cycling, distance running and similar sports. How do you achieve a state of muscle endurance that will allow you to engage in these types of sports?

Maximum Strength Training

Strength training is an integral part of achieving muscle endurance. This is due to the fact that the more strength you have, you will be able to apply more force during whatever sport you are engaged. Additionally endurance athletes practice what is called exercise economy. You should engage in basic training before starting a maximum strength training program. Work major muscle groups using lighter weights with more repetitions. Then progress maximum training where you are lifting heavier weights, fewer times with longer rest periods.

Interval Training

This type of training is an asset to your endurance no matter what type of sport you participate in. Your anaerobic fitness will improve. Anaerobic fitness is your body’s ability to perform at top or maximum muscle capacity. Interval training is simply taking an activity such as biking or running and performing it high intensity for a short period of time, followed by a rest period. Then repeat this several times.

Training for Specific Sports

Every sport has specific training that is just for that sport. For instance soccer players need to have more short-term endurance, while a marathoner requires more long-term endurance. So a soccer player would want to do some medium weight circuit weight training after completion of the maximum strength training exercises. On the other hand the runner would want to lift lighter weights. Both would have rest periods between sets.

You can build muscles and muscle strength without every stepping foot in a gym. Yup, it’s true. You don’t have to buy that expensive membership, nor do you have to purchase expensive in-home equipment or even hire a personal trainer.

Many people don’t know that the main aspect of achieving success in a strength training program is increasing repetition and resistance over time which builds muscle. You can do this at home, the office or on the road. You will, however, need to have a commitment to this program in terms of time and making sure you eat a healthy diet.

Using jugs of milk or bleach (they should be full, not empty), pick those up and tuck our elbows up into your side. While you are doing that, bring the jugs toward your chest and the back down. Do as many repetitions of 10 you can. Let yourself rest between sets.

Upper body strength is achieved easily by that old standby: the push-up. If you can’t do a standard push up, you can work up to it by doing them while standing and pushing your body away from a wall. You can also do a push-up from a position with your knees on the ground.

The plank is a wonderful way to get strength to your core. Lay face down on the floor, then raise yourself onto your forearms and toes. All of your weight should be on these two points. You should be in a straight line from toes to nose and your torso complete off the ground. Hold this position as long as you can. Keep increase this time.

There are many more exercises such as these that you can find through a simple Internet search. Also, find a good healthy diet that can go hand-in-hand with this program and you’ll be in better shape in no time!

If you are considering training for an athletic event at high altitudes there are a few things you should keep in mind. At high elevations, you’ll find that the thinner air means less oxygen is getting to your body. Many people need a period of adjustment when first arriving at high altitudes. The symptoms of this adjustment can range anywhere from mild to severe. You may experience nausea, headache and vomiting which generally occurs within the first eight to 24 hours of your arrival at altitude. Trouble sleep can also occur.

It may take up to seven days to actually acclimate completely to the altitude. Some things that you can do to help these symptoms is make sure you drink plenty of water. Limit alcohol consumption and take aspirin or another similar pain killer. If you experience extreme shortness of breath, make sure you see a medical professional immediately. There is also an uncommon condition that can occur at altitude called high-altitude pulmonary edema. If you experience a wet cough or the feeling that your lungs are filling with fluid, seek medical attention immediately. This is a potential deadly situation.

You can also be at a higher risk for sunburn at higher elevations. Keep in mind that it’s probably cool are these altitudes that can be deception. Make sure you are applying sunscreen on a regular basis.

Because you are probably exerting yourself more than normal while training at high elevations hydration becomes even more important. You will lose more fluids than normal at high altitudes, so it is important that fluid and electrolyte replacement occur before, during and especially after your workouts.

Also be aware of the potential of hypothermia. Again, the high mountains can be deceptive. They can appear sunny, but can be bone chilling. Make sure your apparel is adequate from training at elevation.

Athletes of all kinds require an exercise routine that is specific to their particular sport. This will allow them to improve their performance. Just as important as these exercise and training programs is a diet that will help the athlete perform at top performance. The diet must provide all the elements of nutrients to fuel the body to be its most effective.

The diet should be a reflection of the individual athletic needs. For instance if you are in a sport that relies on muscle power, you will be consuming more protein. This protein consumption will help muscle strength, growth and repair. If your sport requires more endurance and stamina, your diet will require a higher level of carbohydrates. These carbs provide a lasting energy source.

Your body is different from everybody else and has different needs. Therefore your diet will need to be as individual as you are. Take at look at your particular body type, your particular sport and especially how your body reacts to foods. Start by keeping a journal of your eating habits. It’s important to note such issues that while we know eating lots of fruits and vegetables is part of a healthy diet, did you know it may not be advisable for some athletes to eat them before a competition.

Hydrate. Hydrate. Hydrate. This cannot be said too many times. It doesn’t matter what sport you do, water is essential. It helps in reducing injury. In addition some of the foods you eat will help in your hydration. Foods with niacin and potassium will help you stay hydrated as well as help prevent cramps.

Count those calories and such. Make sure you keep track of what you eat. This will make sure you are getting the proper nutrients, including vitamins and minerals. Athletes require more calories than an average person due to an increase level of exertion and activity.

You’ve decided to begin a new fitness and exercise program. Or perhaps you just want to take what you are currently doing to stay fit to another level. You want to either get exercise equipment to start your program or add equipment to that which you already have.

Because you should include several different types of exercise routines to stay fit, you’ll want more than one piece of exercise equipment. You’ll probably be in the market for treadmills, stationary bikes and perhaps even weights. Used exercise equipment is a great way to save money. And here’s a few ways to find that equipment.

Talk to your local gym or health club. They may have used equipment for sale. Studies show that gyms usually purchase new equipment about every 18 to 24 months and you can get a great deal by purchasing the old equipment. Just make sure you inspect this equipment well. These gyms may also have public bulletin boards that either have equipment for sale notices, or you can place an “equipment wanted” notice.

Garage and yard sales are also a great outlet for used equipment. Many people who purchase equipment for their fitness routines do not continue with their programs and lose interest. Most of these people want to sell this equipment.

Thrift stores often have used exercise equipment for sale. You’ll probably need to keep checking as the inventory in these types of stores changes often.

Check your local newspaper advertisements. Check the classifieds for people seeing used equipment.

The Internet is a great resource. Investigate sites such as eBay and Craigslist for individuals who are selling used exercise equipment.

Once you’ve found your desired equipment, make sure you perform a thorough inspection of the equipment so you will know if it is in satisfactory shape and truly what you are looking for.

As an athlete or someone who is training to stay fit, you understand the importance of your legs. They are almost constantly in use — driving, walking, climbing and so on. These legs are especially important to athletes, who require strong legs along with stamina. This is important for sports such as running, cycling or any sport that involves long periods of exertion.

How do you go about building leg stamina? Here’s some ideas.

• First build up the strength in your legs. You can’t really build stamina if you have no strength. Perform strength-building exercises such as leg presses, calf raises, hamstring curls, squats and step-ups.

• During the day, when you’re not at the gym, wear ankle weights. This will add resistance and make your legs feel heavier. As a result, when you remove the weights, your legs will feel less heavy, giving them additional stamina.

• Run long distances. Not only will this build leg stamina, but it will build cardiovascular stamina as well. Run at a medium pace for a minimum of 45 minutes.

• Do sprints. Start with an initial warm up to make sure you don’t injure yourself. Then sprint at your top speed for 30 seconds, followed by a slower paced job for 60 seconds. Do this between 10 and 15 repetitions followed by a cool down period.

• Hills are great for building leg strength and stamina. Run up the hill at top speed and jog down the hill.

• Bike riding will build your legs strength and stamina as well. You can do all the same things as you do when you run — long moderately paced rides, along with springs and intervals.

In addition to exercising, maintain a healthy stamina-building diet to accentuate your goals for leg strength and stamina.
